Welcome to Postman Pat, an animated British children’s TV series which first aired in Britain in 1981 and was created by John Cunliffe. Since airing in Britain, it has become widely popular with DVD’s selling globally. The series follows Postman Pat and his ‘black and white cat’, Jess. It displays their adventures around the village of Greendale delivering post to neighbours and helping them resolve problems.
A topic certain to engage and attract students, Postman Pat has meticulous educational links and in particular, a strong PSHE background. Students will learn the importance of looking after each other, including looking after pets, as Pat looks after Jess the cat so well. Postman Pat integrates British morals and principles through its fantastic story lines and character presence. Students will feel emotionally and ethically enriched through the topic of Postman Pat.
Postman Pat replicates British ethics and values faultlessly as it reflects the post system in Britain today and displays the helpful and friendly attitude of British people. In Performing Arts, students will learn vocabulary associated with the dances taught in each video lesson which indirectly introduces them to Postman Pat and Jess the Cat.
In English, students will be introduced to the topic characters and the basic storyline of Postman Pat.
Following this, students can get creative in art, learning words associated with video lessons. Students will enjoy making crafts including cat envelopes and a post box.
In History, basic vocabulary associated with the British postal system will be taught.
Meanwhile, in Geography students will learn about what is found on a farm
PSHE outlines the importance of looking after animals including what animal’s need.
Furthermore, in Science students will learn basic language associated with healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, in Maths, students will learn time vocabulary related to daily routines.
Students will develop a variety of skills during the topic of Postman Pat. The lesson content is carefully planned and considered to allow students to learn to the best of their ability and develop impressive English speaking, listening and reading skills. Students will attend lessons feeling excited and very capable of following the content due to the engaging topic characters, the educational presentation of the teacher and the simple structure of the lessons.
The students will be introduced to key words associated with the particular dance performance in the video lessons. These include a ‘cat’ dance and a ‘postman’ dance.
Learners will be taught the dance associated with the previous lesson’s key words. Students can join in with the ‘Please Mr Postman’ dance.
In this lesson, students will be taught further dance vocabulary associated with lesson 4. The dance is a cat themed dance.

In this lesson, the characters will be introduced including Postman Pat, Jess the cat, Sara and Mrs. Goggins. Having previously learned ‘cat’ and ‘postman’ in performing arts the students should already be familiar with the characters.
This lesson is a storytelling lesson whereby one teacher will read a popular children’s story, and another will act the story out to help student understanding. The remainder of the lesson will be filled with Postman Pat episodes.
This lesson will give students a brief overview of the story of Postman Pat, allowing them to identify his occupation and purpose throughout the topic.
Students will experience a second storytelling lesson where by one teacher reads a book with the other acting it out and the rest of the lesson filled with postman pat episodes.
Students will learn the keywords associated with a particular craft which will be performed in the following video lesson. This will involve making a post box from a shoe box.
