The Wind in the Willows

What are you looking for? Adventure! Excitement! Fun! Friendship! You can find it all in ‘Wind in the Willows’. There’s never a dull moment in this feel-good story. The story that unfolds in ‘Wind in the Willows’ is a heart-warming tale full of picnics and escapades such as motoring, boating, fishing. Friendship and the animals’ habitats, the river and the Wild Wood, bring animals together.

Mr Toad’s incredible transition from mad-cap, wild and thoughtless character to one where he becomes empathetic and develops an appreciation of solidarity, and for nature, teaches children that friends look out for us. Badger, Mole, and Ratty are Toad’s friends – they are dedicated to Toad even when he tests their patience and loyalty. The English countryside takes a starring role in the novel, as well as the animal characters, Mole, Ratty, Badger and Toad. The animals combine captivating human traits with authentic animal habits.

When the novel begins, Mole is at home under ground in his burrow doing spring cleaning, and he is quite bored with it. Mole abandons his spring cleaning and comes up to the surface where he makes his way to the river. It is at the river that Mole meets Ratty, and the two form an immediate friendship. This friendship brings Ratty’s friends Badger, Otter, and Toad into the story.

The novel continues to follow the animals on their adventures and misadventures. Toad, a well-to-do heir, goes through innumerable fads such as his interest in motor-cars. However, when he steals a car, it is his undoing; he is arrested and sentenced to jail. Eventually, he escapes from jail disguised as a washer-woman. Meanwhile, the other animals must deal with the bad reputations they have for being Toad's friend. Toad’s home is taken over by menacing animals (stoats) from the Wild Woods, and the four friends rally together to save the house. With the Wild Wooders driven away, Toad turns over a new leaf and becomes a respectable aristocrat. He is loved and admired by many. He deepens his friendship with Mole, Rat, and Badger and the four live well thereafter.

Toad

Toad is the most immature of the animals. He is quick to pick up and dismiss expensive hobbies. Throughout the novel, Toad’s friends help him embody a more mature, sensitive and grounded attitude towards life.

Ratty

Ratty (not, in fact, a rat but a water vole) is sociable and accommodating. He has a strong sense of manners and responsibility, so he wants to make sure everyone around him feels comfortable and included. Ratty cares most for Mole, whom he invites to live with him and to whom he acts as mentor.

Mole

Mole is a sensible animal who is generous and extremely loyal to his friends. He is closest of all to Rat, the animal who teaches him the value of exploration after he leaves his home in the first chapter. A 'younger' character than Rat or Badger, Mole serves as our first lens into the story, as he slowly matures from a frightened animal into a self-reliant, brave and clever companion.

Badger

The 'oldest' of the animals, Badger is a stoic and solitary character who lives in the Wild Wood. While he is friendly and hospitable, caring deeply for his friends, he also eschews proper etiquette as a result of his removed, underground life. Because of both his seriousness and his gruffness, he is the one who works hardest to reform Toad's habits.

‘Wind in the Willows’ is a classic of children’s literature. British writer Kenneth Grahame is the book’s author: the novel we know and love today began life as a series of bedtime stories that Grahame wrote for his son. The novel was published in 1908, at the time of King Edward VII’s reign (1901 until 1910). The tale gives us a historical insight into trends of the Edwardian era. The Edwardian era was a particularly prosperous and peaceful time within British history, hence people spent more time dedicated to leisure activities: children can learn about various rural pastimes but, more importantly, that getting involved in collective pursuits improves socialisation and contributes to the development of relationships with others.

A trait of Edwardian literature was that authors began to make more references to nature in their writing. In ‘Wind in the Willows’, Grahame portrays evocative descriptions of the countryside – the topic, with its strong links to wildlife, can teach children about the necessity for humans to co-exist with animals, and to view planet Earth as an ecosystem.

Through the book, children learn about the literary technique of anthropomorphism, which is the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities. In ‘Wind in the Willows’, the animals can be seen as representing facets of human personality and character: Toad represents the British upper class – he has little connection to the real world; Ratty is selfless – ho goes out of his way to help others; Mole is finding his way in the world; Badger has parental qualities. This book should not be underestimated as simply a children’s story, since its pedagogical worth is invaluable.

Toad has an obsession with motorcars. With the arrival of spring, and fine weather outside, Mole loses patience with spring cleaning. He flees his underground home, emerging to take in the air and ends up at the river, which he has never seen before. Mole meets Rat, who, at this time of year, spends his days on, or by, the river. The two get along well and spend many days boating, with ‘Ratty’ teaching Mole the ways of the river, with the two friends living together in Ratty’s riverside home. In geography lessons, we introduce the characters by describing what leisure pursuits they can undertake in the outdoors at various times of the year. We also discuss the importance of the riverbank in relation to animals’ habitats.

In history, we discuss the turn of the millennium in 1900 and the bearing of the reign of King Edward VII on the Edwardian era. We also teach students about the life and times of Kenneth Grahame. Furthermore, we discuss grand houses (great halls) which are of historical importance in Britain, since these are inspired by Toad’s house (Toad Hall).

In science, using Mr Toad as our inspiration, we discuss the physical attributes of frogs and toads, and highlight the features that distinguish the two. When Badger becomes more active in the season of spring, he notices flowers along the riverbank - we use this part of the story to teach students a lesson entitled ‘Flora and Fauna’.

In PSHE, students learn the moral lesson about the impact of crime (in the novel, Mr Toad steals a car). Students also become educated in punishment as a result of crime, whilst thinking about the need for such. In our follow up PSHE lesson, we teach students about ‘Wind in the Willow’s’ core message, that of friendship.

The subject of performing arts allows us to explore the story of ‘Wind in the Willows’ as told through the genre of musical theatre: students learn some key lyrics from a song from the musical, which helps them to acquire meaning through learning English idioms. We also teach students very pertinent words that have an association with the autumn season when studying the song ‘Autumn’ from the musical.

Ratty is actually not a rat but a water vole. Environmentalists like to check the number of river bank species on an annual basis to make sure numbers are not depleting, so, in maths, we will show how to record collated data about numbers of water voles via plotting graphs. In our other maths lesson, we describe how Mole needs to stock up on his food supply as winter approaches, so we check the food items he eats, and in what proportions; we do this through the study of pie charts.

In English lessons, we discuss how Kenneth Grahame profiles all of the characters through clothing and costumes to represent their personality (a method he uses to support the literary technique of anthropomorphism). In our English lesson about dialogue, we teach vocabulary that relates to writing dialogue in novels. Dialogue is an essential component of ‘Wind in the Willows’; Kenneth Grahame’s use of dialogue truly brings the anthropomorphic characters alive.

In art, wind chimes make an excellent complement to the idea of wind blowing in the willows. Therefore, we teach students vocabulary relating to making wind chimes. In our follow up art lesson, we use fishing (a key activity in ‘Wind in the Willows’) to teach students the language they need to create a ‘moving’ fish, as well as teaching about the Japanese art of origami.

‘Wind in the Willows’ is so renowned as an impactful piece of literature that there are over 50 different versions of the novel in the English language alone. Of course, the novel has been translated into multiple foreign languages also.

Grahame’s novel has been adapted for screen and stage several times. For example, in 1983 there was an animated film for television; in 1996, a children’s comedy film was released; in 2006, there was a live action television adaptation. In 2014-2015 the Royal Opera House staged a critically acclaimed dance performance of the story. Most recently, in 2016, ‘Wind in the Willows’ gave life to a musical version. The re-visiting of the story and the re-invention of the genre gives us a sense of just how iconic the story is. The ‘Wind in the Willows’ deserves recognition as a novel in which children will find wisdom, humour, entertainment and meaning.

Interwoven with the famous adventures of Mole, Ratty, Badger and Toad with his canary-coloured caravan, the succession of motor cars, and the climactic battle for Toad Hall are Kenneth Grahame's lyrical explorations of home life (Chapter 5, ‘Dulce Domum’), river life (Chapter 9, ‘Wayfarers All’), and childhood itself (Chapter 7, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’).

Ultimately, the benefit that children can get from this topic is the understanding that to err is human (we all make mistakes) but that we can all make amends. At the end of the novel, Toad makes up for his earlier excesses by seeking out and compensating those he has wronged.
